The Blues were ahead within two minutes, as Terry out-jumped two Schalke defenders to power Cesc Fabregas’s set piece into the top corner. Even the formidable Benedikt Howedes could do nothing to stop this one going in.

A sublime passing move involving Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard soon allowed Willian to drill under the body of Schalke keeper Ralf Fahrmann and make it 2-0, and the signs looked ominous for the home side.

By the time Jan Kirchhoff spectacularly headed into his own net, the game was all but over. This was certainly an own goal to be remembered, even rivalling Cristoph Kramer’s effort for Borussia Monchengladback a few weeks ago.

Substitute Didier Drogba made it four, breaking the offside trap to find the net on the counter. Willian was again at the centre of the move, and it was his pass that allowed the Ivorian to tap home.

Drogba then went from scorer to provider, as he set up another substitute, Ramires, who knocked in the fifth and final nail in the Schalke coffin. A bad night for home manager, and former Blues boss Roberto Di Matteo.
