The England international was victim of a late challenge from rookie Red Devils defender Paddy McNair, who caught Wilshere heavily on the ankle with his studs.

The tackle incensed French journalist Matt Spiro, who took to Twitter to air his views – suggesting that the 22 year-old might find his skills better suit a foreign league.

It’s fair to say that players are granted more space and time on the ball in Spain’s La Liga or Italy’s Serie A, but in truth, injuries happen everywhere.

On the same date as Wilshere’s injury, Borussia Dortmund’s brilliant winger Marco Reus was scythed down by a challenge that was even worse than McNair’s, with SC Paderborn’s Marvin Bakalorz booked afterwards.

Reus too suffered ankle ligament damage, but was fortunate that the blow was not as severe as Wilshere’s, and will be out only until January.

The Premier League is renowned as a physical division, but it is perhaps naive to suggest that Wilshere’s injury issues would be resolved if he moved abroad.
