Videos: Vardy continues fine form with goal but England still lose 2-1 vs Netherlands

Category: Uncategorized

England fans were on a high following the side’s impressive comeback against Germany last week, with a 3-2 win over one of the favourites for the Euros this summer.

They were brought crashing back down to earth following a loss against Netherlands though, losing 2-1 against a side that haven’t even qualified for the competition.

It was a slow start to the game, with England not really getting into gear initially. Things changed shortly before the break though, with a fantastic flowing move resulting in a Jamie Vardy goal. Daniel Sturridge dummied cleverly, with the ball falling for Adam Lallana. He played Kyle Walker in round the back, and the Tottenham right-back showed good composure to pick out Vardy in the box. It was a simple finish from there, and England got their 1-0 lead.

Roy Hodgson’s side were in control after that, and looked far more likely to get the next goal. They failed to capitalise though, and then a string of mistakes resulted in Netherlands equalising.

John Stones has been heavily criticised this season, with the Everton defender being far too overconfident with the ball in dangerous areas. He was guilty once again this game, looking to play out from the back as the last man rather than going back to his keeper, slipping and gifting Netherlands a chance. Fraser Forster made a great save to deny them a goal, but before England could regroup the ball was fired back into the box and struck Danny Rose on the hand.

It was a little harsh, but the referee pointed to the spot, and it was dispatched superbly by Vincent Janssen – Forster had no chance.

The first Netherlands goal was arguably harsh, but the winner was incredibly controversial. Phil Jagielka was clearly fouled during the buildup, and how the referee didn’t blow for it is a complete mystery. The foul was so blatant that the England players practically stopped playing, and Netherlands were able to capitalise and get the winner.

It was only a friendly so obviously means very little, but England would have loved to get consecutive wins in the build up to the Euro 2016 Championships in France.

Jamie Vardy’s goal was a real positive, but the defensive mistakes will be a real concern.
